In the 80’s, through clinical research, we began to notice the development of a psychophysic syndrome which we called AFAS (Acute Functional Adaptation Syndrome) [in Spanish SAFA, Sindrome de Adaptacion Funcional Agudo]. We named it that way, after we realized that that syndrome was directly related with the ongoing environmental changes gradually emerging.

In order to get a better approach to the subject, psychophysics identity concept introduced by Reich (see Orur 4)* and Shape or Biological Matrix concept introduced by Biofunctionalism (see Orur 16)* will be reviewed. The psychophysic identity is based on an identical functioning of  a psychic ‘way of being’ and a body ‘way of being’; on the other hand, the Shape concept refers to a unique origin of both aspects. So, when we refer to functional identity, we mean that one structure and another are sustained in a same origin and perform in the same direction. Having a common origin, both are the manifestation of a previous unique entity, from which they derived.

Simultaneous dissolution of psychic defence (psychic ‘way of being’) and physique defence (body ‘way of being’) as a result of the therapeutic process, is derived from their unique origin. Meanwhile, unconscious contents began to arise and they manifest in two different levels:

-In the psychic, like memoirs and emotional reactions.

After undergoing this disarmouring process for some time, a person begins to loose his regular defences and his dynamically active unconscious contents. This situation places the patient in a state where acceptance is possible. The way acceptance is interpreted in our work, implies the activation of patient’s one selves birth experiences.

In this way, perception is aligned with one selves birth experience; the ego, historically sustained by a set of own defences, begins dissolution, meanwhile one selves birth experience begins to integrate with consciousness as essential knowledge. Once the repression that separated the individual perception from its own origin is dissolved, consciousness unifies and the Biological Matrix stops being the unconsciousness basis and consequently the reactive force providing personal history basis. The change on the way of feeling, thinking and perceiving is the result of a long and meticulous work of going deeper and gradually in the human being deepest inside, with enough perceptive support and being able to increase tolerance to energy released.

What happens if this process occurs all of a sudden? What happens if ego balance is broken spontaneously and defences fall down?

The answer to this questions was called A F A S (Acute Functional Adaptation Syndrome)

AFAS is the spontaneous break down of each body blockage, in such a way that the body as an individuated entity is left without energies to maintain its regular circuits. Energy flows freely throughout the body, and personal history starts to dismantle and comes out of muscles. The AFAS is a sudden discontinuity in personal history which produces an immunologic fall capable of leading an individual to death limit.

At the beginning the person is flooded by sensations, and tries in vain to force his armour reconstruction. An individual looses his world once body blockages are broken because links with world objects are broken as well.  Great part of reality disappears when energy projected in objects is released. This same energy released returns to the body producing overwhelming sensations. Is just the lack of tolerance to sensations, the factor that initiates the illness process.

Generally speaking we could say that a person is diehard in rejecting that energy that comes back transformed in overwhelming sensations, he resists to give up his projections, his personal history. Maybe, that’s the reason why all projected things in the external world are still being projected in the internal world (one selves organism) in a real lost world somatisation lethal process.

In this way, the vain effort for not loosing ‘historic objects’, provokes the beginning of generalized dysfunctions, organic alterations, diverse affections and infections, that reinforce the illness status.

We have then two quite differentiated moments:

Regarding the first moment the following question surges: What is the cause of sudden armour fall? Is here where we could link this syndrome to environmental changes. As we have remarked many times, the numerous alterations to natural environment (understood as deep energetic changes consequences) influence necessarily on each living creature, demanding them to find a way to adapt to the new conditions. That’s why we decided to call it Functional Adaptation Syndrome, and due to the penetrating characteristic of the process we have added the Acute quality.

Regarding the second point,  it is evident that when an individual is able to increment his tolerance to sensations, possibilities of ‘functional adaptation’ increases.  On the contrary, organic affections will increase as a result of non-tolerated, and in consequence non-metabolized, energy.

Is here where AFAS is directed related to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Non-tolerated energy will transcribe as matter, in a real biogenesis process. High bioelectric tension originating biogenesis was early checked by Reich, to which we introduced the understanding of the infectious process as ‘surface of tension’, this is, as an auto generated material surface, able to increase the bioelectric surface of tension in living tissue, or the same, capable of containing released energy from body blockages.  In this context is possible that AIDS virus could be the first material manifestation of this biogenesis process.
